What is the Emergency Service?
The Emergency Service is where sudden illness and injury are first assessed and treated. No appointment is needed; the order in which patients are seen is determined by how urgent their condition is, not by arrival time.
Our emergency department is open around the clock. Patients who need it are kept under observation and referred to the relevant department for further investigation and treatment.
Which situations does it cover?
- Road accidents, falls and other injuries
- Sudden chest pain and shortness of breath
- High fever and general deterioration
- Abdominal pain, vomiting and dehydration from diarrhoea
- Cuts, burns and bleeding
- Fractures, dislocations and sprains
- Loss of consciousness, seizures and dizziness
- Poisoning and allergic reactions
Procedures performed
- Initial assessment and monitoring of vital signs
- Intravenous access and fluid therapy
- Wound care, suturing and dressing
- Casts and splints
- Emergency laboratory tests and imaging
- Observation and admission when required
- Ambulance transfer
When should you seek care without delay?
- Pressure in the chest, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw
- Difficulty breathing or a bluish colour to the skin
- Slurred speech, facial drooping or weakness in one arm
- Bleeding that cannot be stopped
- Confusion or fainting
- Sudden, severe pain that does not ease
